NAPOLCOM leads 2008 crime prevention week celebration The National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) will lead some 3,000 high school and students, and out-of-school youths in the nationwide simultaneous blowing of whistles on September 1, 2008 to be held at the Liwasang Aurora, Quezon City Memorial Circle to mark the start of the 2008 National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW) celebration. The NCPW, which is observed annually every first week of September, is now on its 14th year with the theme “Kapit-bisig Kabataan Tungo sa Kapayapaan,NOW NA!” This year’s slogan is “Lakad Kabataan Laban sa Kriminalidad.” According to Interior and Local Government Secretary and NAPOLCOM Chairman Ronaldo V. Puno, the observance of NCPW is an opportunity to highlight the collective efforts of the different government agencies and nongovernment organizationns particularly the youth sector in fighting criminality. One continuing impact project for this year is the establishment of Student Crime Prevention Network in all schools in Metro Manila aimed to capacitate the youth to promote character building, citizenship training, civic consciousness, volunteerism, and self-reliance through the reorganization of Student Crime Prevention Committees (SCPC). NAPOLCOM Vice-Chairman and Executive Officer Eduardo U. Escueta said the Commission, through the NCPW Technical Working Committee composed of representatives from government agencies and NGOs, has lined up various programs and activities that will enhance public appreciation of crime prevention as a way of life. Escueta said the organizing group has jumpstarted the 2008 NCPW celebration with a series of crime prevention seminars and the organization of SCPC in schools in Metro Manila as early as July. “All these activities aim to elicit the active participation and involvement of the public, particularly the youth sector, in crime prevention and public safety,” Escueta said. Other significant activities scheduled during the week include awareness drive on crime and drug abuse prevention and the organization of SCPCs St. at Jude College, Dimasalang, Manila; Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP), Sta. Mesa, Manila; Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Cavite; and Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), Manila on September 2, 3, 4 and 6, 2008, respectively; and Bulacan State University BSU (Sept. 5 and 6) and Patrol 117 Advocacy Campaign in Quezon City, (Sept. 5 and 6), and Closing ceremony of NCPW and Oath Taking of SCPC Officers in Baguio City (Sept. 7). |
